As some of you may have noticed I keep referencing to Jared playing hockey....
Jared first started playing roller hockey when he was little. He played on a league through the YMCA and really enjoyed it. When he was in High School he stopped playing. Then after we got married he picked it up again. He first started playing ball hockey (hockey on foot, see here) with a few guys in Athens and even competed in a tournament in Florida and one first place in their division. Then he got tired of that and started to play roller hockey in Gwinnett. He played for a few seasons and became good friends with a guy who played roller and ice hockey. This good friend begged Jared to play ice hockey on his league, but he didn't have any of the appropriate gear. Well this good friend had a lot of old gear and was ready to get new stuff, so he let Jared have a lot of it, so that he could play on his friend's league this past summer.
Jared of course was a natural and when he told people that he had just picked up playing ice, they were very surprised. Jared quickly fell in love with the game and decided that when he transferred to the University of Georgia that he was going to play with the Ice Dawgs (UGA's club ice hockey team). So this last semester Jared drove every Wednesday and practiced with the team as a rookie, so he could get recognized. Then in December the coach informed him that he wanted him on the team for Spring semester starting in January.
On January 8th the team had their first game of the semester. I must say when the team came out with their Georgia gear on and I saw Jared (which by the way you think Jared look big and tall naturally? You should see him with his gear and skates on, talk about a Shrek) I got little girl butterflies all over again, wowzer!
{This was very exciting for Jared, but because it's a club team almost everyone "makes the team" if they want, but you only get play time, during games if your good}
Sadly, for his first game he only got to play maybe 5 minutes. Then last weekend they played in a HUGE tournament in Savannah and he got to play a little bit more [Ice Dawgs got 2nd place]. Yesterday (Friday) Jared got to play A LOT and he even scored a goal! I am just so very proud and excited for my ice hockey man!
