This past weekend, on July 4th the Reeves family were honored at the dedication for the newly built Oconee County Veterans Memorial. The project has been on going for a long time, but was finally finished. Most of the money was donated, but the county gave a lot too. The memorial is located in the new Herman C. Michael Recreation Park. It is 13-feet-tall and 23-feet-wide black marble and was constructed in 3 months. The names of all the veterans will soon be placed on the monument. The ceremony was very touching. There was a part where a band played all the songs from each branch of military and during the songs veterans were told to stand and it was amazing to see those young and old that were present. The most touching part was when the first wreath was placed at the memorial in honor of one of our own Josh Reeves, and the other two soldiers who were killed in the Iraq War (Cpl. Evan Marshall and Sgt. Luke Mercardante). I'm very proud of our country and the men who fought for our freedom and the men who fight for the freedom of other. I am also grateful to live in a community that honors the sacrifice of veterans and fallen soldiers.
